This year’s Fiesta SportTrophy (FST) Finland started last weekend at the Arctic Lapland Rally in Rovaniemi. The series is called the Ford Motorcraft FST and there were eight crews competing in the opening round.
This season, Ford Motorcraft FST includes a total of seven rounds with the series running alongside the Finnish Rally Championhip.
Two promising 20-year-old drivers, Miika Hokkanen and Niko Mäkinen, are now running their second season in the series and were the top duo in Rovaniemi.
Mäkinen led the class until the penultimate stage when he had to retire due to a gear selection issue.
Hokkanen took maximum points and he was happy to secure a strong start to the season behind the wheel of his one-litre Ecoboost Ford Fiesta R2.
“We had our own problems, first with damper settings and then with the tyres but eventually it worked for us,” he said. “It’s great to have another top result from the Arctic Rally.”
Positively surprised new-comer, Anssi Valkonen, finished second in class.
He has competed earlier with RWD rally cars but during this winter made himself familiar with the Fiesta R2.
Third in class went to Henrik Pietarinen who lost the chance to fight for victory because of clutch problems.
Patric Öhman was fourth after a relatively clean run ahead of Jani Luhtaniemi and Tom Hanle. Jonna Olkoniemi was fighting for third in class going off the road in SS6 and being forced to retire.
The series continues in Mikkeli at the Vaakuna Rally on 17-18 February.
