Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club, Morecambe Car Club and West Cumbria Motor Sports Club are delighted to announce that M-Sport Managing Director Malcolm Wilson OBE will champion their classic Lake District rally for the 30th year in a row.
The Malcolm Wilson Rally is the second round of the 2016 British Trial & Rally Drivers’ Association (BTRDA) Rally series, and takes place a week later than usual on Saturday 12th March.
The original date had been in danger of clashing with Rally Mexico, a conflict that would have meant Wilson and his M-Sport team were unable to support the Cockermouth-based event.
Despite the potential for this and the recent floods to dampen spirits all round, the clubs joined forces to make the date change possible. Additional support from both the town’s and Allerdale Borough council has meant that the ceremonial start on Cockemouth’s Main Street, will take place on Saturday morning at 07.10am.
The rally’s headquarters is at nearby Dovenby Hall, home to M-Sport’s World Rally & Rallycross Championship teams as well as the Bentley GT team.
Wilson spoke ahead of a gruelling World Rally Championship season:
“It has always been my great pleasure to support this local event, but I can’t believe it has been thirty years! It is testament to the working relationship we have with the organising team and I’m very pleased that we found a solution to the date clash.
“I wouldn’t have wanted to miss such an excellent spectacle in the stunning Lake District scenery. I can’t wait.”
